This Deluxe Harmonium features a scale changer, which functions by physically allowing the keyboard to slide left to right thus enabling the instrument to change the scale/range of the keys. In addition, it also employs an ingenious device, known as a coupler, which physically connects or couples two keys. The result is that playing one key engages two reeds simultaneously that are one octave apart.

This beautiful instrument has 3 banks of Palitana reeds: Base, Male and Female. The air-flow to the reed banks is controlled by 4 stops and 5 drones and, together with an integral bellows, allow it to produce dozens of sound combinations.

This model is tuned to A=440 Hz (+/-5 cents) and covers 3.75 octaves. Pitch can vary significantly with changes in temperature, pumping pressure and the number of keys played simultaneously.

Although it was invented in France nearly 200 years ago, the harmonium has been extremely popular and strongly embraced by India after it was brought there during the British Occupation. Though derived from the designs developed in France, the harmonium was further developed in India in unique ways, such as the addition of drone stops and a scale changing mechanism. The instrument quickly became popular being that it was portable, reliable and easy to learn. The harmonium remains popular to the present day and is an important instrument in many genres of Indian music. It is regularly used as accompaniment in devotional songs and can be commonly found in Indian homes.

As with many Indian instruments, the key for the music is selected to best suit the vocals or to set a mood. The reeds in the harmonium are tuned to sound well together, but not necessarily with other instruments. As such, they are not in concert pitch and not meant to be played like a Western table-top organ. Traditionally, harmoniums are usually higher pitched if compared to the Western scale.

Actual instrument weight is approximately 28.5 lbs.

Made in India.
