This cumbus body is created from spun aluminum and its neck and bridge are wood. The soundboard is a synthetic drum head style. It is 35.5 inches long, 10 inches wide and 6.25 inches deep. It has 6 geared tuning pegs/levers and 6 metal strings; one of which is wound, in 3 courses.
The Cumbus is a relatively young instrument. It was developed in Istanbul in the early 1900's. The inventor, Zeynel, became known as Zeynel Abidin Bey. The famous Ataturk Mustafa Kemal, Turkey's first president, dubbed it Cumbus, pronounced joom-bush. Cumbus is Turkish for revelry, just the mood this instrument inspires.
