Frame drums are one of the most ancient types of musical instruments known to man. They have a simple structure with strong spiritual connections in many cultures and can produce a wide array of entertaining effects. They are usually round, made of wood with animal skin and sometimes metal rings or plates incorporated into the drum to provide an accompanying jingle. They have been constructed in a wide range of different sizes; the larger drums were played mainly by men in spiritual rituals and smaller sized drums mainly by women. Frame drums originated in the ancient Middle East, India, and Rome, and reached medieval Europe through Islamic culture.
Sound World Instruments carries frame drums in an incredible range of sizes, from 8” to 40” in diameter! The smaller frame drums with rings, are held with both hands while the head is played with the fingers. The larger drums and those without jingles are typically played with a leather bound or wooden beater. The largest drums in this family, played with or without a beater, have a characteristically deep resonating voice. The astonishing variety of instruments in this category is determined by the culture of origin: Bendir (North Africa, Turkey), Bodhrán (Ireland), Kanjira (South India), Mazhar and Deff (Egypt), Pandeiro (Brazil), Tambourine, Tar (North Africa), Riq (Arabic world), Buffalo Drum (Native American), Rain Drums...and this is only a partial list!
Some modern frame drums, especially our Remo frame drums lineup, incorporate durable synthetic frames and skins that are extremely resistant to temperature and humidity fluctuations. Some of the higher quality instruments even come with mechanical tuning mechanisms mounted inside the frame. Sound World Instruments also carries the accessories you need, including cases and beaters.
Frame drums are perfect for drum circles and healing ceremonies. Find out for yourself why this easy to play, versatile and fun instrument has been so widely adopted by the world community and has withstood the test of time!
